Ashtanga Yoga
Join us for our weekly Ashtanga Yoga Class. Ashtanga yoga is based on the philosophy of the great Indian sage Maharshi Patanjali.
What is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is the yoga of eight limbs, not limited to the postures and breathwork.
Eight limbs defined by Maharshi Patanjali are –
1. Yama (Restraints)
2. Niyama (Observances)
3. Asana (Postures)
4. Pranayama (Regulation of Breath)
5. Pratyahara (Withholding of senses)
6. Dharana (Concentration/Fixity)
7. Dhyana (Meditation/Contemplation)
8. Samadhi (Absolute Concentration/Oneness with the self).
- “Asana” the third limb of Ashtanga regulates body rhythms and enables a deeper understanding of the body and its correlation with the breath and mind.
- “Pranayama” the fourth limb of Ashtanga. ‘Prana’ means Breath or Vital Force and ‘Ayam’ means Control or regulation. Therefore, pranayama means conscious regulation of breath to manage the mind-body complex through external processes of breathing i.e., Inhalation, Holding of breath, Exhalation, and Suspension of breath.
Maharshi Patanjali has defined yoga as “Yogaschittavrittinirodha” which means stoppage of fluctuations or modifications of the mind.
The first five limbs of Ashtanga work on the external observable aspects of personality such as physical body posture, breathing, use of our senses and our individual and social relationship.
The last three limbs work on improving mental and emotional state and internal processes which cannot be seen but can only be experienced by oneself.
